What can be repaired

As a rule of thumb: chips smaller than a quarter, and cracks shorter than about three inches.

Three things change that answer. Damage directly in the driver's line of sight can leave slight distortion after repair, so replacement is often the better call there. Damage at the very edge of the glass affects structural strength. And a chip left for months collects dirt and moisture, which makes for a less clean repair.

Send us a photo with a coin next to it for scale and we will tell you which you need. We would rather tell you it is repairable than sell you a windshield.

What it costs

$99, flat, whatever you drive. A chip in a ten year old sedan and a chip in a new SUV take the same twenty minutes and the same resin, so they cost the same.

Most comprehensive policies cover chip repair with no deductible at all, because insurers would rather pay $99 now than for a windshield later. We file the claim for you, and in many cases it costs you nothing out of pocket.

How the repair works

We clean the damage, draw the air out of the break under vacuum, then inject a clear resin that fills the void and bonds to the glass. The resin is cured with ultraviolet light and the surface is polished flush.

It restores structural strength and stops the damage spreading. It does not make the chip invisible. You will usually still see a faint mark if you look for it, and anyone promising it will disappear completely is overselling.

Why waiting costs you a windshield

Glass expands and contracts with temperature, and a chip is a weak point. A cold night followed by the defroster on full, or one pothole, is usually what turns a chip into a crack running across the glass.

Once it spreads past repairable size, a $99 job becomes a replacement. And if your vehicle has a camera on the windshield, it becomes a replacement plus a calibration.

How many chips at once

We will normally repair up to three on one windshield. Beyond that the glass has enough weak points that replacement is the sensible answer, and we will say so rather than take the money.

Our guarantee on repairs

If you are not happy with the repair, or the damage spreads from the repaired area afterwards, we credit what you paid toward a new windshield. You are not paying twice.

How it works

Four steps, about twenty minutes

  1. Send us a photo

Text the damage to 703-254-5454 with a coin next to it for scale. We will tell you whether it repairs.

  2. We confirm the price

$99, and we will tell you whether your insurance is likely to cover it with no deductible.

  3. We come to you

About twenty minutes, wherever the car is parked. No extra charge for mobile service.

  4. Drive away

No cure time on a repair. You can drive as soon as we are finished.

Fix it while it is $99, not after it becomes a windshield.

Questions

Frequently asked

How much does chip repair cost?

$99, flat, whatever you drive. Most insurance covers it with no deductible, so it often costs you nothing out of pocket.

Will the chip disappear completely?

No, and be careful of anyone who says it will. The repair restores strength and stops the crack spreading. A faint mark usually remains if you look closely.

How long does it take?

About twenty minutes. There is no cure time to wait out, so you can drive immediately afterwards.

Will a chip repair claim raise my insurance?

A glass-only claim is usually treated differently from an at-fault collision claim, and many customers see no change. We cannot speak for your carrier though, so if you are concerned, ask your agent how they treat a comprehensive glass claim before you file.

How many chips can you repair at once?

Up to three on one windshield. Beyond that we would recommend replacement, and we will tell you so rather than take the money.

The crack already spread. Now what?

Then you need a replacement, and we will tell you that plainly. Use the online quote or call us and we will price it.

Can you repair a chip in the driver's line of sight?

Usually we would advise against it. A repair can leave slight distortion, and directly in front of the driver is the one place that matters. We will look at the photo and tell you honestly.
