What we replace
Sunroof glass, the panel that tilts and slides. Moonroof glass, the tinted fixed or sliding panel. Panoramic roof glass, the large single or split panel over both rows of seats. Fixed glass roofs that do not open at all.
Panoramic panels are large, heavy and expensive, and they are bonded rather than clipped in on many vehicles. That is a job worth doing carefully rather than cheaply.
Why roof glass breaks on its own
Roof glass is tempered, and tempered glass sometimes fails from a stress point rather than an impact. A tiny nick at the edge, a bump in a frame, or a rapid temperature change can be enough, which is why people often report that it exploded while parked or while driving on a clear road.
It is startling but it is not your fault, and in most cases comprehensive insurance treats it exactly like any other glass damage.
The drains matter as much as the glass
Every sunroof has drain tubes running from the corners of the frame down through the pillars. They are the reason a sunroof does not leak in heavy rain.
They also block with pollen, leaf litter and grit, and a blocked drain sends water into the headliner instead. While the panel is out we check and clear the drains. Most shops do not, and the customer finds out the following spring.
The track and the seal
If the panel was broken in a way that damaged the track, or if it had been binding before it broke, new glass alone will not fix it. We check the track, the guides and the motor before we fit the new panel, and we tell you if something else needs doing rather than handing you a repair that fails in a month.
How long it takes
Most sunroof and moonroof panels take one to two hours. Panoramic roofs take longer, and bonded panels need cure time before the vehicle can be driven, in the same way a windshield does. Your technician tells you the exact time before leaving.
For bonded panels we usually recommend the vehicle comes to our Fairfax shop, where conditions are controlled.

Replacement
Old panel out, frame and track checked, drains cleared, new panel fitted and aligned.
Test and cure
Open and close, water test, then the exact time it is safe to drive if the panel is bonded.

My sunroof shattered on its own. Is that normal?

Can sunroof glass be repaired?
No. Like side and back glass it is tempered, so it shatters completely rather than cracking. It has to be replaced.
Do you replace panoramic roofs?
Yes, including split panels and fixed glass roofs. They are larger and often bonded rather than clipped, so they usually need to come to our Fairfax shop and may need cure time before driving.
Will my insurance cover it?
Usually, under comprehensive coverage. You pay your deductible and we put up to $100 toward it. We file the claim for you.
My sunroof leaks but the glass is fine. Can you help?
Yes. That is almost always blocked drain tubes rather than the glass or the seal. We clear the drains and water-test the roof.
